ARCHITECTURAL PEN DRAWING COMMISSION: DARTMOUTH MEMORIES
“We cannot thank Katherine enough for her interpretation and layout of the places we have loved over the years. We were overwhelmed when we saw the finished artwork. It is something that will continually give us pleasure."

We all have special places in our lives. Recently one customer got in touch because she wanted me to capture some special places around Dartmouth – a beautiful spot in Devon that she visits each year with her family.
Together, we discussed the process and planned the architectural line drawing by exchanging emails and photos. Carol Ann sent me a list of places that were special to them along with accompanying photos. When I had all of these memories, photos and places I assembled them into a number of different options of varying lengths and sizes. This draft collaged look is important to make sure the proportions are right and the customer is happy with the scope of the drawing before I start the work. Once I start drawing, it's very difficult to make changes, so the customer signs off the scope and layout of the drawing before I put pen to paper. After a period of refining and editing, we agreed on the layout below. |
I draw on my architectural skills to measure each element - sometimes down to the millimetre. This ensures each piece of the drawing is in proportion and as accurate as possible.

This pen and ink drawing was a bespoke commission which included every place the family had stayed over the years, sometimes multiple times. The challenge was working out what to draw and how to capture it all within one piece of art.
It was a lovely drawing to do, steeped in wonderful memories and was incredibly special for the family. |
